Photograph byMaynard Owen Williams THE ROMAN FORUM ONCE WAS AN OPEN MARKET LINED BY TWO ROWS OFSHOPS A space for open-air town meetings occupied one corner. Between that area and the markets rose a speakers' platform. InHorace's day there were two kinds of forums-one a market place, the other a judicial tribunal. The Roman Forum became the latter type. From atop thePalatine Hill, thephotographer glimpsed (through the trees at the left) the granite columns of the Temple of Saturn. In the center rises the Arch of Septimius Severus. Just outside theForum level isthedomed church of SS. Luca and Marina. In the lower right are the three remaining columns of the Temple of Castor and Pollux (seetext, page 788).
