French troops destroyed the original in1689. Itwas rebuilt asaresidence, with windows instead of loopholes. Perched below on the steep bank is the town of Kochem, a busy wine center and one ofthe valley's most popular summer resorts. Flood control dikes on both sides of the river make delightful promenades.
