Clad in regal splendor, she pauses on the veranda of the Spanish Club, in San Juan (Plate X). Puerto Rico, known to the Spaniards as the "ever faithful colony," was the last bit of Spain in the New World. Its conquest by American troops in 1898 was halted by the armistice that ended the Spanish-American War. A key to the Panama Canal, the island is now an outpost of American defense.
