0 SCENES NEAR RENO, AND THE EXPERIMENTAL TOWERS The city of Reno is seen from the reservoir on the right; the University of the State of Nevadainthe middle, and thetown ofSparks in the distance, near tower No. I; hay ricks from irrigated fields, the water coming from the Truckee River and Lake Tahoe, inthe Sierra Nevada Mountains. The double reservoir. The evaporation was more than twice as rapid at the upper pans as at thewater surface. This isdue toa blanket of vapor about 30 feet thick which retards the evaporation in the layers of air near the water. Inthis way nature conserves its-1 waters from too rapid loss by evaporation.
