Photo by S.G.Wehrli LAKE COMO PROM SALA While not the largest, Lake Como is certainly the most beautiful of all the Italian lakes. Hereisevery element ofnatural beauty--the clear, blue waters of the lake, the lofty mountains with the snow-clad peaks of the Alps rising behindthem, theindescribable tints ofthetrees, the vineyards and the olive groves, while over all is the soft blue of an Italian sky. Poets from thetime ofVirgil have sung itscharms, and all that art could add to nature has been done to increase its attractions. Its banks are gay with luxuriant gardens, inwhich stand thevillas of the Milanese aristocracy, and every few miles finds some quaint white village or town.
