THE UNITED STATES CAPITOL FROM THE NORTHEAST This great structure is generally regarded as the most stately building in the world. Situated in a magnificent park, onahillwhose crest isahundred feet above the river, it dominates every landscape and lends beauty to every picture. It covers nearly fouracres ofground, and cost, from first tolast, nearly $15,ooo,ooo. The dome is the crowning glory of the great edifice. It is of iron and weighs nearly ninemillion pounds. Itsiron plates expand and contract "like a lily" with fluctuation in temperature, but these phenomena have been carefully compensatedfor intheplan ofthestructure. The dome was completed the year that marked the end of the American Civil War. The architects of the Capitol havebeen William Thornton, Benjamin Latrobe, Charles Bulfinch and Thomas U. Walter.
