THE ARMY WAR COLLEGE Here the officers of the United States come to take courses prepar ing them for advance ment tohigher grades, and to work out the military situation asit islikely tobe inthe case ofhostilities with any foreign enemy. The School ofNational Defense, whose classes are composed ofhonor graduates of the infan try, cavalry and artil lery schools ofFort Leavenworth and Fort Monroe, also holds its sessions inthe Wash ington Barracks grounds, of which the War College site isa part. These grounds are situated at the con fluence of the Potomac and Anacostia (or Eastern Branch) Riv ers. The area tobe developed inthat vicinity isthe water gate ofWashington. McKim, Mead and White were the archi tects of the War Col lege.
