(11 A "CAB" STAND IN MODERN VENICE With waterways for streets, Venice has gondolas and barche for "cabs." The gondola holds from four tosix persons, while the barca carries eight people. There are always "hookers" at the stands to assist passengers to embark and disembark and they expect agratuity fortheir services. The shouts of the gondoliers as they turn their corners are weird and melancholy.
