© Underwood & Underwood RUINS OF TIIE GORGEOUS PALACE OF NEBUCHADNEZZAR: BABYLON, MESOPOTAMIA The civilization of Italy is young compared to the duration of civilization in the Euphrates Valley, if we calculate that the culture of modern Rome is approximately 2,800 years old. Assuming that the civilization of the Euphrates perished with the destruction of Babylon in 535 B. C . (see page 161), we know that it was already 3,300 years old, for back in 3800 B. C. there were already in existence on the banks of the Euphrates cities with culture and society and literature almost as complex as that of today. 148
