Griggs GENERAL VIEW ACROSS THE VALLEY OF THE "TEN THOUSAND SMOKES" The steam jets are so much spread out that it is not possible to give any idea of their numbers in a photograph. Even in transverse views like this many of the more distant jets are lost in the distance. The strong wind bent them all close to the ground. What a sight it would have been if the columns of steam had risen straight up! (see page 64).
