ISAAC: PETROGRAD The magnificent gilded dome of this the largest church in the Russian capital is one of the mostimpressive landmarks of the great city on the Neva. It was begun in 1819 and .completed in 1858 from plans prepared by the French architect, Ricard deMonferrand. The inner height of the great center dome is 269 feet, 44 feet greater than that of St. Paul's in London. Built of granite and marble, the structure cost more than 23,000,000 rubles ($II,750,000).
