Photograph by Maynard Owen Williams WHERE THE ORIGINAL ALEXANDER'S BAND PLAYED A VICTORY MARCH AFTER'THE BATTLE OF ISSUS Beilan is the only considerable village on the age-old road that led from the Mediterranean to therich city ofAntioch. The town has scores of cool springs and is a favorite summer resort for the residents of Alexandretta and Aleppo. A remarkable feature ofBailan isthat itshouses are of wood, which is enough to distinguish any Syrian village. After defeating Darius on the field ofIssus, Alexander the Great passed through Beilan en his way to the Syrian Gates, just above the city.
