Photograph byHarold F.Weston THE GREAT MAIDAN AT ISPAHAN, BUILT FOR POLO IN THE YEAR 16o0, BUT NOW USED FOR THE EXECUTION OFROBBERS Two hundred and fifty brigand leaders were recently hanged in this great public square, which was built byShah Abbas forpolo and feats of horsemanship. Particularly notorious criminals were sometimes tied to the mouths of the cannon seen intheforeground and blown topieces (see illustration on opposite page). The crowd shown in the photograph has gathered around the deadbody ofJaffar Khouli (see illustration, page 436). The spires in the distance are not factory chimneys, but minarets of mosques built four centuries ago.
