But theMongols were allowed to preserve their original tribal form of government. When the Manchus in turn disappeared from China, theMongols declared their complete independence. Today, however, they are fearful of the inroads of the Chinese, whose thrifty agriculturists arealready encroaching on the Mongolian steppes.
