Photograph from Walter Weston THE HIGHEST ACTIVE VOLCANO IN JAPAN, YAKE-DAKE Yake-dake has a more famous twin, Asama-yama. near the summer resort of Karuizawa, with which apparently there isasubterranean con nection. When one is active the other is resting for its own turn, which comes with mathematical regularity. The two active volcanoes areabout fifty miles apart.
