Photograph by Emil P.Albrecht THE FONTANA DI TREVI With a flow of more than seventeen million gallons of water a day, the Fontana di Trevi is the most magnificent ofthe public fountains inRome. The central niche has a figure of Neptune, and at either side are figures of Health and Fertility, in front of alarge stone basin. Itiscustomary for the traveler leaving Rome to drink deep from this fountain by moonlight and throw a coin in thebasin, inthe belief that his return isthus assured. The street urchin, fishing in the clear waters the next morning, profits by the tradition.
