Itwas originally laid outbythegreat Lycurgus, one of the "ten" Attic orators. The present stadium is really merely a resheathing of the oldstructure inPentelic marble. ACorinthian propylaeum of a temporary nature now forms the entrance. In the background is seen Mount Hymettus. The new work was inaugurated with the Olympic games of 1906 (see text, page 607).
