LOOKING ACROSS ECHO CRATER This vividly colored crater is 700 feet deep and about one-fourth of a mile wide. The eastern sidehas breached away until itisonly 1oo feet high. Viewed from the center, the crater shows the effects of two explosions, the first of which formedthe crater, the second blowing ahole inthe bottom. A ridge on the southern end is pitted with 14 smaller craters, 9 of which are of the blow-out,orexplosive, type. Echo Crater isoneof the few in the district having trees on the inside (see text, page 312).
