Kragh TIIE THREE PAGODAS AT KASTNG, ON THE GRAND CANAL Construction of this noted waterway, running from Hangchow to Tientsin, is supposed to have been begun in480B.C.For centuries itwas used to transport tribute rice to Peking. It is crossed by many beautiful stone bridges and lined with pagodasand memorial arches. The sails ofthe Grand Canal junks have been aptly described as "one-fourth matting, one-fourth holes, and one-half miscellaneous material."
