Five years later a Marylander, the Rev. John Carroll, was appointed Bishop of Baltimore, the first Roman Catholic Bishop intheUnited States. This distinguished prelate and statesman founded Georgetown College on its imposing eminence overlookingthe Potomac River (1789). John Carroll was the cousin of Charles Carroll (see pages 154, 171, 194-195) and brother of Daniel Carroll, member of the Continental Congress (see pages 171,2II).
