o Photograph byJ.T.McGarvey THE JOLTING PEKING CART IS NORTH CHINA'S CIIIEF WHEELED VEIIICLE These open conveyances are springless, but furnish a cheap and popular means of transportation for the humbler urban classes, aswell asforthe country people and their goods. The carts also serve as army wagons. The canvas sunshade extendsfrom the horse's head tothe back ofthe vehicle, but the soldier, in addition, uses a paper umbrella. The three rows of nails embellishing thefellies ofthe wheels give the appearance of great strength. A hooded type of Peking cart is shown on page 708.
