Photograph from Levasseur NEAR THIS SPOT GAMA SPENT HIS LAST NIGHT BEFORE SAILING TO FIND THE SEA ROUTE TOINDIA Long ago, on this site, there stood a seamen's home built by Henry the Navigator. From it Gama started onhis voyage ofdiscovery, and there he was received by Manoel I on his return in 1499. The king had vowed to erect here a convent should Gama succeed. Now parts oftheinstitution, known as Convento dos Jeronymos, are used as an orphanage (see, also, illustrations, pages 505, 547, and549).
