Photograph byR.Lenz DRIVING WILD ELEPHANTS ACROSS THE MENAM RIVER TO MAKE A "SIAMESE HOLIDAY" A royal elephant hunt, or "round-up," is the occasion for elaborate festivities in Siam. For weeks beatersscour thejungle and assemble agreat herd of wild elephants, sometimes numbering as many as 300. These are carefully guided toward the scene of theround-up. Inthis particular hunt they have been driven into a river. Boats of all sizes and descriptions hedge them in, keeping at a safe distance. Hunters mounted ontame elephants urge the wild animals across the stream. The shouts of the multitude set the great beasts' nerves on edge, andthey trumpet angrily and spout water over each other (see, also, pages 259 and 260).
