NO FAIRER HAVEN THAN TAIOHAE BAY: MARQUESAS ISLANDS Forty-two days out from Los Angeles, the author sailed into these quiet waters of Nuku Hiva Island. On the beach to the right Capt. David Porter, American naval officer of the War of 1812, had his encampment and repaired his ships. Behind the clump oftrees, just where the reef of rocks extends from the shore on the left, once stood the house of a Marquesan king (see illustration, page 157). Nearby, under the tamarind tree, can beseen the roof of Queen Vikahue's house.
