00 Photograph from Brig. Gen. P.R.C.Groves LOOKING DOWN 4,000 FEET UPON THE WHITE CITY OF DAMASCUS, PEARL OFTHE ORIENT Backed by bare, chocolate-colored, lime-streaked mountains, this oriental jewel lifts pink roofs above theemerald sea of surrounding orchards. One of the oldest, if not the oldest, of the world's inhabited cities, Damascus is thoroughly Mohammedan. Its luscious fruits make it"the paradise onearth" for which the Prophet sighed, and have caused it to be extravagantly extolled by the poets of the sterile Arabian peninsula.
