Nine hundred vessels and more than 30,000 sailors went out from Palma alone and to a great extent the islands dominated the commerce and shipping ofthe western end ofthe great inland sea. The cathedral, which may be seen in the central background, is Palma's most imposing architectural offering. Itwas begun by Jaime I early in the 13th century but was not completed until several hundred years later.
