The slopes of the mountains arecovered with pine and carob trees, while the valley in the midst of which S611er nestles is golden with orange and lemon gardens. These latter probablygave thetown itsname, which initsoriginal form meant "a golden shell." In the 16th century S611er was attacked by a large force of Barbary pirates. Tradition says theinvaders were defeated with a loss of 600, while the islanders sustained only six casualties.
