The Kajar dynasty, overthrown in 1925, kept up one of the most magnificent courts of the modern world. In thearchives ofourState Department, atWash ington, is a treaty of "Friendship and Commerce" between the United States and Persia, dated 1856, inwhich thepreamble begins: "The President of the United States of America and His Majesty, as exalted as the planet Saturn; the Sovereign to whomthe Sun serves asastandard; whose splendor and magnificence, are equal to that of the skies; the Sublime Sovereign and Monarch whose armies are asnumerous asthestars; whose greatness calls to mind that of Jemshid; whose magnificence equals that of Darius; the Heir of the Crown and Throne oftheKaianians; theSublime Emperor of all Persia," etc.
