Photograph by Eleanor Lattimore THE DIFFICULTY IS TO KEEP THE FEET OFF THE GROUND An old Turki and his veiled womenfolk, coming to market in Kashgar, ride their tiny donkeys past the grounds of the old Russo-Asiatic Bank, which in Tsarist days was a center of Russian influence in Sinkiang. It has now been converted into a Chinese Government office. UNMUZZLED, THEDONKEY TREADS OUT THE GRAIN In the heart of a Sinkiangoasis, golden with the harvest oflate August, one can hardly imagine theutter desert ofgravel and arid clay that lies half a mile away, beyond thelast irrigation ditch. Here the author bade farewell to the pleasant land and likable people ofSinkiang.
