JOHNS HARBOR Various are the methods employed to drive a vessel through the ice: dynamiting, rolling (see page 103), cutting ice, and poling. Inthe last named method the crew, using long pokers or stabber poles, thrusts the ice broken by the armored prow along the sides and out ofreach of the propeller. The Kite was the author's first command.
