Beside her father's deathbed, Wu Qiuhua waits. Within hours Wu Qizhi, 60, was dead from cancer of the esophagus. He lived in Wuxin, one of many "cancer villages" along the lower portion of the Yellow River, where pollution has caused a spike in cancer rates. "No matter what we do," says Wu Qiuhua, "it's useless."
