HEROIC OIL, sculpted in bronze and titled "Drop of Life," stands in Kogalym. It was given to the city by Lukoil, Russia's largest private oil company, in 2001, the tenth anniversary of the company's founding. While tolerating private firms, the national govern ment is tightening its control of the industry, worrying some experts. Still, from the sleek interior of a well control center at the South Yagunskoye field, Lukoil's future, like that of Russia's new economy, seems bright-for now.
